On Monday August 11, 2008 I participated in the crossing of Lake Tahoe, all 22 miles of it, on a paddle board. The crossing was a fundraiser for the Bob Woodruff Foundation for traumatic brain injuries for Iraq and Afghan Vets. It was a special day. I am very pleased to have been invited.
Dave Kalama letting the folks know what’s up. A documentary was made of the crossing by mulit-Emmy documentary award winner David L. Brown.
Robb Gaffney laying out the gameplan at sunrise.

It begins - see those mountains straight ahead? That’s Land-Ho. It’s Just about 7am here.
Here I am pointing at my first Landmark -that corner of trees way out there. That is 1/3 of the way.
JT Holmes, Arne Backstrom, and myself getting our paddle on.
Support boats. We were very happy to have 4 or 5 boats chilling with us to give us food and water.
But every once in awhile you’d find yourself all out on your own. Very cool feeling. Did you know Lake Tahoe is 1600 feet deep? I didn’t.
Stroking.
Chuck Patterson-The man.
The posse coming into home stretch. I felt good all day long, but the lastcouple miles I was feeling it a little. My feet were wore, and my big toes were numb. And my back, lats, traps, shoulders, core, stomach, hip flexors, ass, hammies, calves, hands, just about everything was feeling it. Pretty cool.
!Land-Ho! What a day. What a great experience. Met some incredible people and was very stoked on the cause.I look forward to next year.
So check this out: about a month ago a friend of mine asked if I’d like to participate in a fundraiser to help out with injured soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan - he said we’d be ‘paddle boating’ across Lake Tahoe. I thought it sounded cool and would be good for my knee to get in a little paddle boat and essentially ‘bike’ across the lake - good for my knee. A week ago I got the press release and it was talking about ‘paddle boarding’ not boating. And it says it’s 18 miles across the length of Lake Tahoe!! And then it says dudes like Jonny Mosely, Daron Ralves, Jeremy Jones, etc etc are doing it !! Here is a picture of what I get to stand on and paddle across Lake Tahoe:
It is all going down this Monday August 11. We are beginning the journey early in the morn and hopefully, if the winds cooperate, take 5 to 6 hours. Beers are going to taste good that night. Just the other day I had a chance to cruise over the great salt lake in a heli. My buddy is in Helicopter school and said I was welcome to tag along anytime. Sweet. Here are some pics taken with my new camera, a HOLGA (takes pretty cool old-school looking photos).
