Inspiration

I was asked recently what inspires me. I thought about it. Then stopped thinking and started talking. When I started talking I didn’t have a gameplan for my answer. But I figured it out. The unknown inspires me. The known that becomes false inspires me. So many generations lived and died believing the earth was the center of the universe, until Copernicus came along and said the Sun was actually center. Then it wasn’t just one solar system we were a part of - there were millions of galaxies just like ours. How many generations lived and died believing the earth was flat? Did man really travel to the moon? I get inspired when I ponder what we believe now as ‘fact’, but what is the next monumental true falsehood? I’ve been hearing that quantum scientists are on the verge of finding that some quantum particles can travel faster than the speed of light.! We are going to become aware of some very interesting things in my lifetime. It excites me. The possibilities are infinite. I think magnetic propulsion is fascinating.

I get inspired when I think about outerspace. I would like to go someday. To have that perspective would be the ultimate. Can you imagine strapping yourself to the tip of 3 million gallons of fuel and saying, “Light It.”

Powder Magazine Auction

When I was in Vegas for the SIA show, POWDER magazine hosted
an auction
to raise money to benefit Stand Strong Again. My friend Chris
Tatsuno
called me at the beginning and said they had a great shot
of my late best friend, Billy Poole up for auction and the
POWDER guys said I should make my way over. It was 5pm and the show
didn’t officially end until 6pm, I asked my business partner to handle any
appointments/walk-bys for the last hour at the Discrete booth.
I made my way over to the POWDER booth and the first photo up was Billys:

I had just put this picture up in my room, there is a fold-out
last page spread in the most recent POWDER of this shot.

I said to myself I would bid on this shot and win regardless of how
high the $$ got. But then I realized the shot was Will Wissman’s
- a good friend of mine. I then made the decision
I would begin bidding on it and if I got it for a decent price, great.
If it got too high, then I could duplicate it with Will’s permission.
The bidding started at $200 - I raised my hand and people were stoked.
I thought I just might get it at $200, but after a few moments some dude
raised his hand for $250. Then the POWDER editor, Derek Taylor, quickly
bidded at $300. They went back and forth for awhile, and Derek
got the framed photo at $450. He went up to accept it and said,
“you know this is a great shot of an amazing athlete, Julian I want you
to have it.” Derek brought me up and presented me with the photo and
gave me a big hug. What a cool/thoughtful thing to do.
Thank you Derek. Cheers Billy.
